Premier League team of the week dominated by Aston Villa, Newcastle, Arsenal and Brighton - gallery

Here’s how the Premier League team of the week shapes up for the weekend of 21-23 January 2023 - as Aston Villa, Arsenal, Brighton & Newcastle United dominate.

It was a weekend of football that saw defences thrive in the Premier League, as 10 out of the 20 teams in the division kept clean sheets between January 21-23. Unlike the previous set of matches, there weren’t too many surprises as the majority of results were to be expected.

The two best games of the weekend would have to be Arsenal’s late 3-2 victory over Manchester United and Brighton and Hove Albion’s last-gasp 2-2 draw at Leicester City. Eddie Nketiah’s double, including a 90th-minute winner, helped the Gunners regain a five-point lead with a game in hand at the summit of the table.

At the King Power Stadium, the Seagulls took the lead early on through a stupendous curled effort from Kaoru Mitoma, but Leicester were able to make things interesting as they got ahead and led for much of the fixture. Super substitute Evan Ferguson had other ideas, though, as the 18-year-old came on to net an equaliser in the 88th minute.

West Midlands clubs Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers had contrasting experiences as Unai Emery’s side grabbed a vital 1-0 win at Southampton, but Julen Lopetegui’s men suffered a painful 3-0 defeat against Manchester City. Moving up to 28 points after 20 games, the Villans deservedly have representation in this installment of the Premier League team of the week.
