Premier League team of the season so far dominated by Aston Villa, Spurs, Arsenal, Man City & Newcastle United - gallery

Here’s how the Premier League team of the season looks after 8 matches - with some surprise inclusions.

The Premier League 2023/24 season has come to a brief pause for the second international break of the campaign. Some of the teams won’t have wanted the break to come as they were building up momentum whilst others could do with the breather to regroup and try to take stock of the situation they're in.

It's Ange Postecoglou's Spurs who are at the top of the pile right now with six wins and two defeats so far. Arsenal are in second with the same record, but Spurs have scored 18 goals to the Gunners' 16, and so they're top on the virtue of goals scored. Last season's treble winners Manchester City are third, and trail the top two by two points following a 1-0 defeat at the Emirates.

How about how the Midlands teams are performing? Aston Villa are currently fifth, and are just a point off of a Champions League spot which is currently occupied by Liverpool. Villa got knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Everton, but they're evenly poised in their Europa Conference League group, and also doing well in the league with defeats to Newcastle United and Liverpool the only blemishes on their Prem campaign so far.

As for Wolves, they drew 1-1 in the Midlands Derby with Villa at Molineux in their final fixture before the break, and are currently four points above the relegation zone in 14th. Gary O’Neil took over from Julen Lopetegui, and has so far done a satisfactory job. Sheffield United, Bournemouth and Burnley occupy the relegation zone right now and have only eight points between them, with both Sheffield United and Bournemouth yet to win this season.

Football is a team game, but in the Premier League when any player comes into form, there’s a massive spotlight on them. They’re either pushing for a new deal at their club, or there’s some transfer speculation about them and where they can end up next.

With all that said, here are the 11 players in the Premier League - with four starts or more – with the best average rating in their position.
