Aston Villa and Wolves are set to head into the second-half of the season

Liverpool lead the way at the top of the Premier League table with Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea below them. The Reds turned to Arne Slot last year after Jurgen Klopp’s exit and he has made a great start to life at Anfield as his side chase down the title.

Aston Villa find themselves in 8th position and are chasing down a place in Europe along with the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth. Unai Emery’s men reached the top four last term but have had to balance Champions League football with their domestic duties which has naturally been tough.

At the bottom the end of the league, it has been a tough campaign for Wolves so far. They appointed Vitor Pereira as their replacement for Gary O’Neil following their poor run of form and they are battling for survival.

They are just outside the bottom three above Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City. The Midlands outfit and Everton are both hoping that they can drag the likes of Manchester United, West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur into trouble, although they could be a tall order.

Will Aston Villa qualify for Europe?

Aston Villa have the chance to bring in some new faces before the end of the January transfer window to further bolster their ranks. They also have the opportunity to let some individuals head out the exit door should they wish to which would help free up space and funds in their ranks.

Emery has depth in his squad and will need it as they have some European fixtures coming their way. Playing a couple of games a week does take it’s toll and they need to be prepared for the workload.

Villa showed great character in their last league outing to come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Arsenal. After securing a point at the Emirates Stadium, their head coach said: “We showed resilience, we showed mentality today.

“In 90 minutes, we struggled sometimes when they were dominating the match. In some moments we needed to be defensively strong and we needed the goalkeeper, but we had our moments to control the game with the ball, to get into their box and to be close to scoring a goal.”

Will Wolves be relegated?

Wolves are lacking consistency and need to tighten things up at the back. Pereira made an immediate positive impact when he first came in earlier this winter but results have started to fall off.

They lost 3-1 away at Chelsea on Monday night and will want to bounce back with a win against Arsenal at home next up. The fixture list isn’t being kind to them at the moment. The one saving grace for Wolves is the fact that Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton are all struggling. They were promoted from the Championship last year but have found the step up tough.
