Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has provided a positive team news update ahead of Villa’s Premier League clash with Southampton on Saturday, confirming that Marvelous Nakamba is now less than a month away from returning.

After a positive start to life under Gerrard, Nakamba suffered a serious knee injury in December that required an operation and he’s been unavailable since.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Saints game, the Villa boss gave the latest on the Zimbabwean as well as the others currently on the treatment table.

“Carney [Chukwuemeka] will miss tomorrow’s game,” Gerrard explained.

“He’s got an outside chance of being involved against Leeds. He’s back out on the pitch just clearing one or two things before he comes back into full training hopefully on Monday.

“Bertrand Traore has trained the last two days, Thursday, Friday and he’s come through with no issues so he’s available for selection.

“The rest you know of. Naka is going to be another three to four weeks, hopefully it will be three.

“Aside from that, we’re good to go.”
