Villa fought off Bayern Munich to secure the 26-year-old

Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Villarreal to sign central defender Pau Torres on a permanent deal.

The Athletic reported last week that personal terms have also been accepted ahead of the Spain international’s move to Villa Park. Unai Emery was desperate to reunite with the 26-year-old after spending two years with the player at Villarreal, and now the deal is sealed and all but confirmed.

With personal terms accepted and a £30 million fee – which could rise to £34.3 million with add-ons – agreed with Villarreal, Torres’ move is now very close to being sealed.

Torres, who has been heavily linked with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich in recent months, is widely regarded as world-class.

The defender is set to become Villa’s second major addition of the summer window, following Youri Tielemans’ transfer from Leicester City.

When will he sign?

The Daily Mail has reported that Torres is expected to seal his move to Villa Park early next week (week starting July 10). Villa are also still in the market for a winger, with Brennan Johnson, Wilfried Gnonto and Harvey Barnes all linked with the club.

What’s Emery said about Torres?

Emery was vital in convincing Torres of the project being built at Villa Park as the centre back was originally demanding Champions League football from his next club.

“Pau is an amazing player, I think he’s top. I’ve been a coach in Sevilla, PSG, Arsenal and I’ve never seen a centre back like Torres,” Emery said as Villarreal boss in January 2021.
