Aston Villa are expecting a busy transfer deadline day as they look to bolster the squad.

While Steven Gerrard continues to target some fresh faces on deadline day, it is looking likely that left-back Matt Targett will leave the club in the coming hours.

Newcastle United have previously been linked with Targett and have now reportedly agreed a loan deal for the defender, according to Sky Sports.

Targett made 38 league appearances last season but has fallen down the pecking order this season following the arrival of Lucas Digne earlier this month.

With Villa’s reported pursuit of Bologna’s Aaron Hickey, it is clear that Targett’s future at Villa Park is bleak.

According to Sky Sports, Targett and the Magpies held positive talks over a deal and he is now due to undergo a medical today ahead of a loan move until the end of the season.

Newcastle lack squad depth in the left-back position and currently rely on Paul Dummett.

The Tyneside club would certainly be able to provide Targett with regular first team action for the remainder of the campaign, while the 26-year-old would be forced to play second fiddle to Digne if he stayed in Birmingham.

As well as a bid for Hickey, Villa are likely to continue their pursuit of Brighton midfielder, Yves Bissouma.

The West Midlands club missed out on primary target Rodrigo Bentacur yesterday, with the ex-Juventus midfielder choosing to join Tottenham Hotspur.
