Aston Villa reportedly held an interest in signing Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White this summer.

According to a Twitter post from the Daily Mail’s Midlands football journalist, Tom Collomosse, Villa along with their Premier League rivals Newcastle United had an interest in signing Gibbs-White. He added that both the Villa and the Magpies made a passing enquiry but their interest in the forward did not go beyond that and there was no formal approach.

In Collomosse's report in his Daily Mail article he believes that contract talks are expected to take place over the course of the season, which would make him one of their highest paid players. His current contract which he signed in 2022 expires in three-years time, but the Reds want to keep hold of their star man.

The 24-year-old has been named in Lee Carsley's first England squad, and is hopeful of making his debut for the Three Lions. An appearance in the Nations League over the next week would tie him down to England, despite being able to play for Jamaica. The desire for homegrown talent in squad's is massive among Premier League clubs, and that usually results in bigger transfer fees.

Forest signed Gibbs-White in the summer of 2022, in a deal that could be worth up to £42.5m. An initial fee of £25m was paid with a further £17.5m in add-ons, and since his arrival, he’s been a key player for them.

He's already got off the mark this season having scored in the 1-0 win against Southampton and has captained them in all three of their league matches. The Stafford-born midfielder got 10 assists and five goals in 37 league games last season, and is a pivotal part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

As for Villa, their enquiry was tentative, and they may have already moved on from Gibbs-White. They reunited with Jaden Philogene who after one season at Hull City returned for a discounted price. Morgan Rogers has since partnered Ollie Watkins in attack, whilst Ross Barkley and Emi Buendia are also options.
