The mega £11m Aston Villa signing who could soar Unai Emery's side to new heights - and humiliate Chelsea

Aston Villa could beat Chelsea to the signing of a Champions League-winning goalkeeper.

Emiliano Martinez could leave and Aston Villa could land a rapid replacement as Unai Emery’s side are reportedly among several to have been offered the chance to sign a Champions League-winning goalkeeper.

The Villans are currently on a mission to sort out their finances before June 30, the cut-off point for conforming to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR). English top-tier clubs must prove they have not recorded a loss of more than £105 million over the past three years and Villa are the most at risk as it stands.

Martinez is one of those who may have to be sacrificed to bring in emergency funds, while winger Leon Bailey has been lined up for a transfer to the Saudi Pro League. Then there are the likes of Emiliano Buendia, Enzo Barrenechea, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Alex Moreno and Leander Dendoncker, who are all up for sale this month.

There are several reasons why Martinez has been at the forefront of the conversation. For starters, the two-time Yashin Trophy winner is one of the most valuable players in the squad and he’s also one of the most replaceable – especially after he had a season below his usual standards. Martinez also turns 33 in September, and, although that’s not old for a goalkeeper, it does mean his value and ability will begin to decline.

Aston Villa offered ‘dream’ Emi Martinez replacement signing

Villa are in the process of trying to find a replacement for Martinez before they let him go. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, arguably the best goalkeeper in La Liga last season, was a priority target but he’s now on his way to Barcelona. LOSC Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, recently the recipient of the Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Season award, is on the shortlist.

There’s now reportedly an opportunity to sign someone who could quite possibly be considered an upgrade on Martinez, as TBR Football claims Villa have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, along with Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Chelsea.

Barcelona are reportedly ready to let the six-time La Liga champion and six-time Copa del Rey winner depart the Camp Nou as Garcia will become their new first-choice shot-stopper, with Wojciech Szczęsny as the backup. It’s a shock development as ter Stegen, who won the Champions League in 2015, has been one of the world’s best goalkeepers for more than a decade.

Villa may not take up the opportunity to sign ter Stegen if his wage demands are too excessive but the 44-time Germany international is surely worth considering. Before last season, when he was out injured with a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee, ter Stegen had been effectively immovable from Barcelona’s starting lineup for eight successive La Liga campaigns.

Since joining from Borussia Mönchengladbach for around £11 million in 2014, ter Stegen has racked up an extraordinary 422 appearances for Barça. In that time, the German has conceded 416 goals and kept 175 clean sheets. For Gladbach, ter Stegen conceded 136 and preserved 45 shut-outs in 127 matches.

If Villa do sign ter Stegen, they would be beating several other Premier League clubs who have been handed the chance. Chelsea and Man Utd in particular are on the hunt for goalkeeping upgrades, so Villa could sign a dream Martinez replacement all while humiliating their rivals.
