Manchester United have ‘shortlisted’ Aston Villa favourite John McGinn for a summer transfer as they look to rebuild their disappointing midfield.

That’s according to The Telegraph who claim there are numerous people within the club that think highly of McGinn, including fellow Scots, Sir Alex Ferguson and Darren Fletcher.

McGinn, 27, has over two years left on his contract at Villa Park and would take a significant fee to be prized away from the west midlands.

However, United are said to be willing to stump up around £40million to land the central midfielder.

The Scotland international has become a huge fan favourite among the Villa faithful since his arrival from Hibernian in August 2018.

He was a key part of the squad that won promotion back to the Premier League and has since cemented himself as a real top player at this level.

McGinn missed the 2-2 draw with United last weekend but was a key part of the Villa side that got their first victory at Old Trafford since 2009 back in September.

The 27-year-old is a natural leader and has deputised as captain of the club on a number of occasions, especially since the departure of Jack Grealish in the summer.

His leadership qualities are again something The Telegraph claim that United are very interested in due to their increased lack of discipline over recent years.

A lot can change within the next few months and with the Red Devils not ready to make a move until the summer, it could force Villa’s hand to offer the Scotsman an improved deal.

As things stand, there’s only one club that looks the more appealing moving forward anyway and it isn’t those that wear red.

In 129 appearances in the west midlands, McGinn has found the net 16 times and provided 21 assists.
