Man Utd and Aston Villa 'updated' on transfer status of £45m sensation

The latest Premier League transfer news as Aston Villa and Manchester United battle for a £45m Ligue 1 sensation.

Aston Villa and Manchester United have reportedly been notified of the transfer status of LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David. The Canada international, who has recorded 10 goals and six assists in 24 appearances this season, is said to be keen on departing Ligue 1 for the Premier League or La Liga.

David is predominantly a centre forward but also capable of playing as a second striker – akin to the role Moussa Diaby performs alongside Ollie Watkins. That could make him a particularly attractive option for Unai Emery, who is keen to add depth to his frontline as Villa aim high in multiple competitions.

Football Transfers reports both the Villans and United are being kept updated on David's situation at Lille, with a recent notification being of the player's desire to move. It hasn't been the most successful campaign for the 23-year-old, who has netted just five league goals in 17 matches.

David's last outing was far more successful, however, as he gained confidence by registering three goals, three assists and a penalty win in a 12-0 thumping of amateur outfit Golden Lions. The attacker's current transfer value - as per Transfermarkt - is £42.9 million. His current Lille contract expires on June 30, 2024 – in 18 months.

Meanwhile, Villa dealt blow in Ngonge pursuit

In other transfer news, Villa must now fight off AC Milan – as well as Fiorentina – if they are to sign Hellas Verona forward Cyril Ngonge. The 23-year-old, who notched five goals and two assists in 18 Serie A appearances this term, has reportedly been the subject of an official bid from Villa.

If Ngonge were signed, he would add depth in attack, providing healthy competition for the likes of Diaby and Leon Bailey. It may be difficult to complete a deal, however, with reports in Italy suggesting Ngonge would rather stick to Serie A than make a move to the Premier League.
