Luis Suarez to Aston Villa latest update as Arsenal player also linked to the club ahead of clash with Everton

Any suggestions Athletico Madrid striker Luis Suárez could be set to reunited with former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa have been dismissed.

Gerrard had reportedly been keen to make the Uruguayan star his third signing of the January transfer window - but another former Anfield favourite has told The Express he thinks the move is highly unlikely to happen.

Former Reds defender Jose Enrique told the Express: “I think it’s just a rumour because they’ve got Philippe Coutinho and I don’t think Luis would go to Aston Villa, go to the Premier League from a team like Atletico Madrid - one of the best teams in La Liga.

“Why would he go to Aston Villa?

“I know we’re talking about next season but if I was him I would not come back to the Premier League. I think he can do a job there.

“They have a very good team there they have Danny Ings, they have Ollie Watkins, you have players who when Suarez was at his peak they can’t compete.

“Suarez is obviously not the same player he used to be.”

England youngster linked to Villa

One striker that is said to be on Gerrard’s radar is Arsenal’s highly-rated forward Eddie Nketiah.

The Athletic have suggested Villa is a possible destination for the England Under-21 frontman - although they face competition from a number of fellow Premier League clubs.

Villa’s Premier League rivals Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a move for left-back Matt Targett.

The former Fulham and Southampton defender is facing competition for his place after the signing of Lucas Digne - and 90 Minutes have suggested Targett could depart to join Eddie Howe’s side before the end of the month.

Young duo tipped to depart on loan

One player continually linked with a move away from Villa Park is young striker Cameron Archer.

The highly-rated frontman is attracted loan interest from a number of Championship and League One clubs - and Football League World have reported Preston North End are leading the chase for his services.

Another young player set to leave the club is Jaden Philogene-Bidace, who is being lined up for a loan move to Stoke City.
