Liverpool will be without star midfielder Thiago Alcantara for this month’s Premier League meeting against Aston Villa after he underwent surgery on a hip problem.

With five games remaining in the Reds’ season, the club made the call for Thiago to go under the knife before the end of the campaign.

It means he will miss the club’s final home game of the campaign against Villa on May 20. As it stands, just two points sit between the sides in the league table, as the pair battle for a European place.

A Champions League place is all-but out of reach for the two clubs, with the sides who finish in fifth and sixth poised to compete in the Europa League next season.

Seventh place is set to be enough for a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Liverpool have a handful of injury problems in midfield ahead of the meeting with Villa, with youngster Stefan Bajcetic also ruled out of for the remainder of the season.

The player scored when the sides met at Villa Park earlier this season as the Reds picked up a 3-1 win with Mohammed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Ollie Watkins also finding the net in that fixture.

Liverpool have a game in hand over Unai Emery’s men which they play on Wednesday night against Fulham. Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita are set to be absent for that game and it is not yet clear if they will recover to face Villa in just over two weeks.

Aston Villa are back in action against Wolves this weekend and take on Tottenham Hotspur the following week. Spurs sit in sixth position, and are only ahead of Emery’s men on goal difference.

After travelling to Anfield, Villa face another side fighting for European football as they welcome Brighton to Villa Park on the final day of the Premier League season.
