Jamie Carragher sparks big debate over Aston Villa, Leeds United and Everton

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher sparked a huge social media debate on Sunday when he asked: “Is there a bigger club than Everton to go down?”

Frank Lampard’s side dropped into the Premier League relegation zone after they failed to match Burnley’s win versus Wolverhampton Wanderers by losing 2-0 to bitter rivals Liverpool.

The Toffees, although with a game in hand, could be five points away from Burnley, who travel to Watford on Saturday, by the time they kick-off against Chelsea 23 hours later.

There is serious concern around Goodison Park that Everton could suffer their first relegation since 1951 and as a result, drop out of the Premier League for the first time in their history.

Carragher, speaking on Super Sunday, said: “I think if Everton go down, Everton will become a template for every other owner and club in the Premier League of how not to do it.

“To spend that much money and find themselves going down… I’m trying to think of other clubs that have gone down in the Premier League, has there been a bigger club than Everton to go down?

“You are talking about one of the biggest football clubs. You are talking about only six teams that have been ever-present in the Premier League.”

Well, Newcastle fans were quick to answer Carragher’s question having suffered relegation at the end of the 2008/09 and 2015/16 campaigns. Former boss Graeme Souness also suggested the Magpies, but Carragher hit back: “No, I don’t think so. In my lifetime, Everton have never gone down and have won trophies. Newcastle are the opposite.”

While plenty of Newcastle fans tweeted Carragher to voice their opinion, so too did Aston Villa and Leeds United fans, while Nottingham Forest were also brought into the equation.

Villa and Forest are, of course, the only clubs to be relegated which have won the European Cup.
