Manchester City overcame a heated Champions League quater-final second leg against Atletico Madrid to secure a place in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition.

Pep Guardiola’s side held Atletico to a 0-0 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, winning 1-0 on aggragete thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s strike at the Etihad in the first leg last week.

Scuffles broke out late in the match and in the tunnel as Atletico’s frustrations at their failure to prise open City’s defence boiled over, and UEFA could even now appoint an ethics and disciplinary inspector to fully investigate what happened, and will await and assess reports on the trouble from the referee and match delegate.

Grealish’s message after tense semi-final

Former Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish remained on the bench during the game last night, but he was at the centre of the drama in Madrid.

Atletico were furious towards the end of the tie, as several players and staff struggled to contain their emotions at the end.

Felipe was sent off after recieving a second yellow card for a late tackle on Phil Foden, and Stefan Savic should have received a similar punishment for a headbutt on Raheem Sterling, while the distasteful scenes continued down the tunnel after the full-time whistle.

In Grealish’s defence, he, like Foden, was clearly a marked man by the Atleti players.

The 26-year-old was fouled five times after coming on in the 68th minute of the first leg, a game where three opposition players were booked for fouls on him.

Savic was even seen pulling Grealish’s hair at the Etihad, something he evidently hadn’t forgotten during the second leg in Madrid.

During the melee which ensued from Felipe’s red card and Savic’s headbutt, Grealish made a beeline for the former City defender, who responded to a rather unpleasant insult by again tugging at those luscious blonde locks.

The feud wasn’t over either. After the full-time whistle their exchange continued down the tunnel, with Savic being restrained from reaching the England international.

After the game, Grealish took to Instagram and posted a message on his story.

He wrote: “Well done the boys! through to the semis.”
