Unai Emery has persuaded club chiefs to spend €9million on the defender but he will remain at Red Star Belgrade on loan until the summer. Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the 18-year-old admitted he was “impressed” by Villa’s offer and always set out to compete in the “strongest league” in world football.

"When I started training in football, my dream was to play for Red Star, then for the national team and to try out in the strongest league in the world,” the Serbian under-19 international said. “I expect that, by the summer, I will achieve that goal of wearing the national team jersey. I hope for an invitation. So I believe that I will fulfil all three goals by the summer.

"This kind of offer from Aston Villa is extremely impressive to me, I am very excited and it means a lot to my self-confidence. I hope that everything will go well in Birmingham when signing the contract and then I will return to Serbia for the continuation of the season and winning the double crown.

"I have six months to prepare as well as possible. To go there as a mature and ready player to provide much better games. I believe that I will be much better in the Zvezda jersey in the future, than I was in the autumn."
