Villa enter the fixture in sixth spot with nine points to their name, leaving them in pole position to reach the last 16 at the moment, while the visitors are three points worse off in 22nd position after a mixed start to their European campaign.

The clash marks a repeat of last season’s Champions League opener when Unai Emery’s men ran out 3-0 winner in Bern at the Stadion Wankdorf, with midfielders Youri Tielemans, Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana all getting on the scoresheet. The only difference this time around is that Villa are the hosts. The West Midlands outfit have notably only lost one of their 14 games in Europe under Emery, with the last coming in a 4-2 loss to Olympiacos in the Conference League semi-final.

Aston Villa vs. BSC Young Boys team news

Tyrone Mings has been ruled out of this contest with a thigh injury which is expected to keep him on the sidelines until January. It means Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof will be the most likely options in central defence.

Onana, who scored against Young Boys last season in an impressive Champions League triumph, is a major doubt for this match. The Belgium international, who is expected to play at the World Cup in North America, scored against Bournemouth in his last appearance before the international break, but failed to make the squad against Leeds United at the weekend due to a knock.

Andres Garcia remains one the sidelines. It’s not yet been determined when the January signing will be back in action. He’s had a frustrating injury-hit start to this campaign.

Joel Monteiro, Ebrima Colley, Edimilson Fernandes and Facinet Conte could all potentially miss the game for the visitors. The Swiss side have an overall record of two wins, two draws and nine defeats against English opponents in their history. They have only faced Aston Villa on one occasion in Europe and that came when the two teams went toe-to-toe last term in the Champions League.
