How Aston Villa’s net spend for January transfers compares to Chelsea, Leeds, Brighton and rivals - gallery

An incredible, record-breaking January transfer window has finally come to a close in the Premier League – but who ended up with the biggest net spend?

With no new signings for either side, it was a near-silent deadline day for West Midlands sides Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Unai Emery’s team conducted some business, though the majority of it included sending players out on loan. Wolves, meanwhile, did not complete a single incoming or outgoing – though fans will likely not be fazed due to the success earlier in the month.

The Villans let three players depart on loan deals until the end of the current season – defensive anchor man Marvelous Nakamba to Luton Town, centre back Lamar Bogarde to Bristol Rovers, and playmaker Aaron Ramsey to Middlesbrough. Emery was unable to bring in the midfielder and winger he wanted, though Bertrand Traore’s loan at Basaksehir being cut short offers some hope.

There was far more activity elsewhere in the Premier League, including a British transfer record broken by Chelsea with the £106 million signing of Enzo Fernandez. Meanwhile, table leaders Arsenal signed Jorginho, Marcel Sabitzer joined Manchester United to provide cover for the injured Christian Eriksen, and Keylor Navas made a surprise move to Nottingham Forest.

After plenty of last-ditch deals, hard work and determination, all the wheeling and dealing is now at a standstill until the summer. With some teams very active and others not so much so, here is how the final net spend table looks from the 2023 January transfer window, according to Transfermarkt.
