Patrick Vieira confirmed the absences during his pre-match press conference.

“James Tomkins and James McArthur will not be part of the game and the same for Nathan,” he said.

There’s no time frame noted on a return for Tomkins whilst McArthur could return at the end of the month. Ferguson on the other hand will likely be out of action until December.

Nothing was noted in regards to Butland but he’s fallen rapidly down the pecking order at Selhurst Park since the arrival of Sam Johnstone but regardless he isn’t expected to be back in training until September.

Villa have a big injury woe of their own with summer signing Diego Carlos undergoing sucessful surgery on an achilles injury he picked up during the 2-1 win over Everton.

It’s an issue that is expected to keep him out of action until the new year at the earliest.

Fellow centre-back Kortney Hause has returned to training though the trip to London should come too soon for him.

Steven Gerrard will be left to choose a centre-back partnership from Tyrone Mings, Calum Chambers and Ezri Konsa for the clash.
