Aston Villa are back in Premier League action once again on New Year’s Day as they head away to Tottenham Hotspur. One week after a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of an in-form Liverpool, Unai Emery’s side will be eager to bounce back with an improved result on the road.
The Villans went into the World Cup break seven or so weeks ago in top form having beaten Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion in quick succession, but it was a tricky return during the festive period. It was a strong performance going forward, though and Tottenham have looked shaky of late.
Conceding 11 goals in their last five matches and struggling to a 2-2 draw with Brentford last week, Antonio Conte’s side are lacking stability at current. Emery is very aware of their talent, though, and the quality of Spurs’ head coach. “I know Antonio Conte’s team is so so competitive,” Emery said ahead of the game.
“It was already a big challenge at home [against Liverpool] even with the supporters but it is a big competitive challenge away. We won in Brighton and we need to keep the same mentality as at home. We need to be together and be firm,” Emery said. It is bound to be a tough game and with that in mind, here is the strong starting XI we think Villa will field.

5. RB: Matty Cash
On the bench for the Boxing Day defeat to Liverpool but we expect the Polish international to come back in, replacing Ashley Young.
6. CDM: Douglas Luiz
Notched the assist for Ollie Watkins’ goal a week ago, with a well-weighted cross into the area. Has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet.
7. CDM: Boubacar Kamara
Perhaps the most impressive of Villa’s players in the Liverpool loss and is starting to consistently dominate the middle of the park.
8. LAM: Emi Buendia
Takes risks and that is sometimes something you need against a team like Tottenham. All it takes is one or two of his through balls to pay off. Also maybe too early for Coutinho.
