There was a surprise managerial departure involving a former Villa, Blues and Baggies striker at the weekend.

Former Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City striker Kevin Phillips has revealed his surprise at the events that played out prior to his departure from National League club Hartlepool United.

After kicking off his managerial career by leading South Shields to the Northern Premier League Premier Division title during the 2022/23 season he departed the North East club at the end of the campaign. After undertaking media duties during the first half of the current season, Phillips was named as successor to former Hartlepool manager John Askey in January and he led the Suit Direct Stadium club to a mid-table finish in non-league football’s top tier after fears they could be dragged into the relegation battle.

Phillips had already started planning for a first full season in charge of the club and held meetings with players over the last fortnight as he began to piece together his squad for the new campaign. However, it has now been claimed an initial contract offer was rescinded before a new manager was appointed in his place.

In a statement released on Phillips’ behalf, it was stated the former Villa and Blues star was offered a new contract by the National League club after the ‘option terms’ on the deal he penned in January were met and ‘agreed milestones’ were hit. It was revealed Phillips was offered a two-year deal, which also contained an option for a further 12 months - but that offer was then surprisingly withdrawn at the weekend and the 50-year-old was relieved of his duties with immediate effect before former Woking manager Darren Sarll was appointed as his successor just hours later

The former England striker added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Hartlepool United and with all the existing staff there. The club has terrific support and an established fan base to be proud of, which always made matchdays a pleasure.

“I had wished to continue the journey with everyone and build a successful team together. I leave with fond memories and shall continue to follow the club's progress, hoping they can enjoy every success in the future.”
