Reports on Thursday stated that Villa were ‘keeping an eye’ on the Welshman whose contract at the Bernabeu expires at the end of the month.
Bale’s future has been a hot topic for the last few years since falling out of favour in Madrid with fans of the Los Blancos frustrated that the 32-year-old often seemed to put country before club.
But the former Tottenham Hotspur man has shown he can still mix it with the best following both his loan spell with Spurs and top level international performances - both which appear to have put a number of clubs, including Villa, on high alert.
The choice will ultimately be left up to Bale though and Saunders believes his fellow countryman will sway towards the Magpies.
“If I could pick a club for him to go to now, I’d say sign for Newcastle,” he told talkSPORT.
“They’ve got a project; they’re going in the right direction – he would slot in.
“The fans right now in Newcastle, because I’ve been there and I worked there – and I realise how much they love the club – right now they could sell 80,000 season tickets.”
