Newcastle United and Arsenal are two other Premier League clubs said to be considering a move but the Villans have already got a step ahead by making an official approach.

Sky Sport Germany reports Leverkusen have received a €45 million (£38.5 million) proposal from Unai Emery’s side and swiftly rejected – but talks remain ongoing.

He said: “The priority (for Villa) remains Moussa Diaby. Their opening proposal was €35m plus add-ons, not €45m, €35m plus add-ons. And the answer from Bayer Leverkusen was no.

“They want way more than that, but they’re also aware of the desire of the player to make his move to the Premier League and join Unai Emery.”
