Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter has reportedly rejected a summer move to Aston Villa, according to Football Insider.

Steven Gerrard’s side are looking to bolster their defence and were keen to add the German to their ranks, however it is believed their ‘big money’ contract offer wasn’t enough to lure him to Villa Park.

After spending his entire career in Germany, the 28-year-old has reportedly opted to remain in his home country and sign for former club, SC Freiburg.

Ginter joined Freiburg’s academy at 9 years old and remained with the club until 2014, before joining Borussia Dortmund.

Despite his best days arguably passing him, the centre-back has remained a regular in Monchengladbach’s team and also made appearances for the German national team in the Euro 2020 tournament.

With Ginter’s contract sent to expire this summer, it is a massive blow for Aston Villa who had hoped to take advantage of the free agent market.

The Midlands club have conceded three or more goals on eight occasions this season and will continue to keep their eyes peeled for defensive reinforcements.

Gerrard brought in Lucas Digne and Calum Chambers to strengthen the backline in January, however the former has struggled with injury since his arrival, while the former Arsenal has only made a handful of appearances.
