The Villa boss is eyeing a number of potential defensive additions and has been linked with the likes of Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Matthias Ginter in recent months.

It has been reported both players have been in talks with Villa but are not believed to be one of the ‘big name’ defensive additions planned by Gerrard this summer.

Football Insider have suggested the Villa boss will allow Tyrone Mings leave, if he gets his way in the transfer market in the close-season.

The former Ipswich Town defender has been a key part of the Villa side since he joined the club three years ago - but his time at Villa Park could come to an end.

Barca pushing for permanent deal for on-loan star

The future of on-loan Villa star Philippe Coutinho remains unresolved, as the final month of his temporary stint at Villa Park approaches.

The Brazil international enjoyed a spectacular introduction to life at Villa when he scored on his debut in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

Further goals followed against Leeds United and Everton, but a slight downturn in form has led to Villa reconsidering a permanent move at the end of the season according to reports in Spain.

Diario Sport have reported Barcelona are pushing for a final decision on the Brazilian as they look to trim their wage bill in light of ongoing financial issues.

The report also suggests Arsenal, Manchester City and Newcastle United are also keen on a deal for the playmaker.

Arsenal urged to sign Villa star

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has backed his old club to add to their midfield options by signing Villa star Douglas Luiz this summer.

The Gunners are expected to have a hectic close-season as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad and build on a season of progression at the Emirates.

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell has suggested Luiz would form a strong partnership with Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey.

He said: “I think he’d be a great partner for Partey.

“You can see us struggling in midfield right now. (Mohamed) Elneny is not the answer. He will be gone at the end of the season.

“(Granit) Xhaka is our second best because he is experienced in there but I still have a question mark over him.

“Douglas Luiz is hungry, young and is a good ball player. I think he could come in and do a really good job.”
