Could Douglas Luiz be a flop at Juventus?

In the summer transfer window, Douglas Luiz - alongside his girlfriend, Alisha Lehmann - made the jump to Juventus from Aston Villa for a fee of £42.35m.

It was a massive move for the 26-year-old - but his start to life in Turin has not gone according to plan thus far.

According to a recent report from Italian outlet TuttoJuve, fans of the Old Lady are beginning to doubt Luiz’s capabilities.

Indeed, there are fears he could end up being a ‘flop’ at the club, despite the large amount of money that was spent to bring him on board.

Juventus are no strangers to Brazilian midfielders who have failed to meet expectations in the past - and this trend has likely exacerbated fears that Luiz will be yet another player who embodies it.

Luiz’s start to the season has been unspectacular at best. However, he has received little help from head coach Thiago Motta, who has started him in only one Serie A game so far in the current campaign. The former Holt End favourite has made five appearances in all competitions, four of which came from the bench. As things stand, the Brazilian international has not scored a goal or registered any assists.

It makes for concerning reading when you examine his stellar record at Aston Villa in 2023/24. Last season, Luiz made 53 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, scoring 10 goals and racking up 10 assists along the way. He was one of their most important players, but has not hit the ground running at Juventus.

Currently, Juve sit fourth in the Serie A table with eight points. They have won two and drawn two of their opening four league games. They have scored six goals in the competition thus far and have yet to concede a goal in Italy’s top division this season.
