Brewery launches Aston Villa inspired beer to celebrate Champions League status with help from 1982 heroes

A local brewery and taproom is releasing a new beer to celebrate Aston Villa’s qualification for the Champions League.

‘Up the Villa’ is a 5% New England IPA, made with all English hops, starting with Challenger, a classic variety with a nod to the hops used when Villa won the European Cup in 1982.

Established in 2020, Trinity Brew Co. has been serving craft beers brewed with specialist British malt, growing in popularity ever since at their taproom in Lichfield.

The new Villa themed beer is mixed with Jester, Olicana and Harlequin, bringing the tropical flavours of New World Hops, and developed and grown in the UK. It’s an easy drinking IPA, that’s packed with the flavour.

Some of Villa’s 1982 European Cup-winning heroes including Gary Williams, Tony Morley, and Gary Shaw are also endorsing the new ale, and will be holding a Q&A at the taproom in September to celebrate the launch of the beer.

The ‘80’s legends are also going to be helping with the brewing process. Gary Williams, left back for Aston Villa in the 1982 winning team said: “When we were contacted by Trinity Brew Co. and they explained their vision, we thought it was a great idea and is a fantastic celebration of both current and past teams, celebrated in a beer.

“I love the idea of the hops from the 80’s and hops from now being used in the brewing process. With the brewery being called Trinity, and the Trinity Road stand at Villa Park, it all seemed to fit very nicely.”

‘We’re so proud of the team’

Trinity brew Co. founder John Waterman and some of the team who are massive Villa fans, are really excited for the launch of the beer. John said: “We can’t wait for customers to try our Villa inspired beer, we are super proud of the Villa team qualifying for the Champions League and have so much respect for the ‘82 team.

“Having some of the legendary players endorse the beer is huge and we can’t wait for them to come to the brewery to try the beer.”

When will the beer be available?

‘Up the Villa’ will be available at the Trinity Brew Co. taproom (open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) as well as bars and pubs around the Midlands from Saturday, September 14.
