Aston Villa: Steven Gerrard explains what he ‘craves more of’ following Leicester draw

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard says he ‘craves more’ hard-fought points away from home if his team aren’t able to find the net.

The 0-0 draw with Leicester City marked the fourth successive game where Villa have been unable to score from open play and whilst Gerrard acknowledged that this is of course an issue, he adds that the team need to find more discipline and keep clean-sheets if they are going to struggle up the other end.

Villa sit in the top half of the league table in terms of number of clean sheets kept so far this season but it isn’t stopping the scouser from demanding more.

Speaking after the game Gerrard said: “That’s the positive today (the clean-sheet), it’s a big point.”

“Brendan has got this team well coached, they are all near enough back to full fitness.

“On the back of four defeats before a ball is kicked, this is a real tough game for us and he didn’t make as many changes as he has been doing - I think he showed us a respect by doing that.

“You’re not given anything here, you’ve got to come here and earn it and we’ve earned a right positive point.

“The plan was to come here and to win the game. I thought we had some decent chances to try and score goals today, unfortunately we never but I see this as a positive point and I crave more of these.

“If you can’t win in this league, it’s important that you take something away from the game because these points improve your league position come the end of it.

“If you look at Newcastle away, Brentford away, we could have been four or five points better off by defending like we did today. That’s a positive and a base for us to go into the Norwich game from.

“The Norwich game will be different, playing against a team fighting for their lives. The onus will be on us to create and to open the door, I’m sure it will but it’s critical that we go into the game with the right attitude and mentality that those three points are important.”
