Aston Villa suffered a setback amid their return to form over the weekend, losing to West Ham United.

A late rush of goals saw Villa come up just short against an impressive West Ham side, with Andriy Yarmolenko and Pablo Fornals on target ahead of Jaco Ramey’s consolation goal.

Despite the setback, Villa remain in the top half, and they remain on course for an impressive finish to the season following a less than ideal start.

Gerrard and his men will be desperate to secure a top half finish to head into next season with confidence, and over the summer, the former Rangers boss will look to put his own stamp on the squad.

Coutinho problem

Arsenal are being tipped to hijack Aston Villa’s bid to sign Philippe Coutinho this summer.

Villa have an option to buy in the midfielder’s loan deal, with Barcelona offering up the chance for the Midlands club to make the deal permanent for £34million.

But according to Sport, Mikel Arteta has been impressed by Coutinho’s performances while on loan at Villa Park, and he is considering hijacking the move as he looks to get his squad ready for a possible Champions League campaign.

Targett deal ‘agreed’

Newcastle United are said to have agreed a deal with Aston Villa to complete the permanent signing of Matt Targett.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle have agreed a £15million deal with Villa to snap up Targett long-term.

Targett joined the Magpies on loan in January, going on to make six Premier League starts so far,
