Aston Villa’s 2021/22 campaign has been an eventful one so far.
On the pitch we’ve had everything from an historic win at Old Trafford to a late capitulation against rivals Wolves and off of it we’ve seen the departure of a much-loved manager, Dean Smith, replaced by a Premier League legend in his own right in Steven Gerrard.
That in itself probably tells a story - it’s been very inconsistent for the claret & blue.
One day the squad look like world beaters and the next they look like one made up of strangers rather than teammates.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look with great interest at how the stat experts have rated each member of the Villa squad based on their performances so far.
Philippe Coutinho has been a revelation since his arrival at Villa Park and he unsurprisingly is right up there whereas others who you may expect to be alongside him such as Marvelous Nakamba, sit low down in the table.
WhoScored.com claims that their ratings are “considered to be the most accurate, respected and well-known performance indicators in the world of football” and are “based on a unique, comprehensive statistical algorithm, calculated live during the game. There are over 200 raw statistics included in the calculation of a player’’s/team’’s rating, weighted according to their influence within the game.”
So who have been Villa’s standout players from the season so far and who have failed to live up to the expectations?
Here’s a full breakdown from best to worst. (All that have made less than 10 appearances marked with an *).
