Aston Villa are back on home soil this afternoon as they play host to Manchester United in the Premier League. The Red Devils take to Villa Park to challenge the Villans in what is Unai Emery’s first game in charge.

Having finally come in to take over the reins from Steven Gerrard only a matter of days ago, Emery and his new-look backroom team have not had long to make their first impressions, nor have they been able to make a thorough assessment of the squad.

Whether there will be any dramatic selection changes awaits to be seen, but after an embarrassing 4-0 drubbing at Newcastle United last weekend, Villa will be looking to bounce back no matter what. It will be tough, though, as United have been on top form themselves.

Winning three of their last five matches, including victories over Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, Erik ten Hag’s side could prove to be a difficult first opposition for Emery. United will be keen to maintain their momentum going into the international break as they hope to place themselves in the top four.

Villa do have a slight advantage when it comes to team news, however. Here are all the latest injury updates ahead of Sunday’s clash.

What is the team news ahead of Aston Villa vs Manchester United?

The Villans only have one player definitely ruled out for the game against United and it is Diego Carlos, who has already been sidelined for a few months. The Brazilian is expected to return at some point toward the end of the season after surgery on a ruptured Achilles’ tendon.

Emiliano Martinez, who picked up a concussion against Newcastle, should theoretically be fine to play. There was no confirmation on this, however, at Emery’s first press conference. With that in mind, we have him down as a doubt.

Two others who could feature but remain doubts are loaned-in left-back Ludwig Augustinsson and powerhouse midfielder, Boubacar Kamara. Both have been seen back in training this week.

United on the other hand have two key players who will miss out, with Raphael Varane injured and Bruno Fernandes suspended. Attacking trio Jadon Sancho, Antony and Anthony Martial are all doubts.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, ten Hag said: “It’s difficult to say in this moment. I have to talk with the medical and performance [teams]. They did a programme in Manchester. I have to hear how their progress was and if they can be available for Sunday’s match.”

Meanwhile, England international Marcus Rashford was pictured in training on Friday and should be fine to play. He had picked up a muscle injury ahead of United’s Europa League win over Real Sociedad - but is likely now in the all-clear.
