Aston Villa have reportedly begun discussions with centre-half Ezri Konsa over a new contract as a reward for his impressive and continued progression under Unai Emery.

The 25-year-old has been a key player for Villa ever since signing in 2019 from Brentford but he has particularly shone under the new manager.

Reliable and capable of playing in most positions across the back four, Konsa didn’t miss a single Premier League game last season and he’s played every minute this term.

The Daily Mail reports conversations are already underway between the Villans and Konsa over an improved contract to reflect his importance to the club.

This follows recent comments from former boss Dean Smith, who is in disbelief that Konsa is yet to receive an England call-up from Gareth Southgate.

“I am amazed he’s not playing for England yet. He is a Rolls-Royce of a player,” Smith told the BBC.

“He made a big mistake against Newcastle for the second goal, but he has recovered from that. He’s a top player.

“I don’t know why he isn’t being picked. He’s one of the standouts. Steven Gerrard came in after me and kept playing him.

“They have brought in centre-halves since then and Unai keeps playing him as well. That’s a sign he’s rated,” Smith continued.

Konsa and the rest of the Villa squad are next in action on Thursday as they take on Legia Warsaw in their first Europa Conference League group encounter.
