The cash flying out of Villa Park isn't quite at the level of the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal, but big transfers are still fairly frequent.
Moussa Diaby became the new record signing in July 2023 as he joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee in the region of £52 million. Pau Torres was expensive, too, as he cost around £33 million from Villarreal.
Those deals - as well as the recent January transfer window - have got us thinking, who are the rest of the most expensive signings in Villa history?
From the least to most expensive, here are the 13 biggest deals Villa have conducted in the Premier League, working out at a total of over £350 million.
1. =12th: Philippe Coutinho - £17 million (now at Al-Duhail)
Once one of the world’s best players, Coutinho was an incredible exciting addition. His initial loan was a success, too, prompting a £17 million permanent deal from Barcelona. Just one goal was scored throughout 2022/23, however, as the Brazilian was plagued by injuries. On loan at Al-Duhail SC in Qatar, Coutinho is still contracted to Villa but is unlikely to play for the club again.
2. =12th: Bertrand Traore - £17 million (still at Villa)
Traore, plagued by injuries, certainly hasn’t been a success since joining from Olympique Lyon in 2020. The 2020/21 season wasn’t bad as he scored seven and assisted seven in 36 games, but he’s hardly played since. The club is growing increasingly frustrated by his recoveries from injuries just in time for international duty, before getting injured again while with Burkina Faso.
3. 11th: Tyrone Mings - £20 million (still at Villa)
Mings has been a superb servant ever since joining from AFC Bournemouth in July 2019. The former England international has 166 appearances, eight goals and nine assists to his name at Villa. A devastating injury at the start of the campaign has ruled him out until next season.
4. 10th: Wesley Moraes - £22 million (now at Stoke City)
Dear oh dear, this one didn’t work out. Wesley was popular but didn’t live up to his astronomical price tag. Just six goals were netted in 26 matches, making him a flop considering the fee paid. He’s now at Stoke following his departure from Villa Park in the summer but he hasn’t scored a single goal for the Potters just yet.
