Aston Villa continue to be linked with a whole host of players ahead of the January transfer window as Unai Emery is expected to make reinforcements to his squad. The new man in the dugout managed back-to-back Premier League victories before the World Cup break but he is bound to want to make his mark by diving into the market.
It has been widely reported that the Villans are hopeful of bringing in a marquee signing in a forward position, with the likes of Joao Felix, Matheus Cunha, Nicolas Jackson and Samuel Chukwueze heavily linked over the last few weeks. There are not too many squad numbers available as it stands, though, and so any new additions may have to settle for a less attractive figure on their shirt.

Including and below the number 35, there are just eight currently left vacant. Everything from one to 12 has been taken, whereas below 21 just 13, 14 and 20 remain. The latter two may be alright settlers but they are hardly going to help convince players when they potentially have better options waiting for them elsewhere.
Of course, it would not come down to the squad number alone for a transfer target to snub Villa, but it is certainly a factor - especially with the forever-increasing value of branding and sponsorship off the pitch as well as on. Of the personnel mentioned, Felix currently dons the seven at Atletico Madrid, and Cunha is number nine.
Meanwhile, Villarreal striker Jackson has the 15 on his back and his teammate Chukwueze holds the 11 shirt this campaign. None of these numbers are an option at Villa Park. Here is a full list of the current squad numbers as well as a list of the ones that are still available.
