Aston Villa have the opportunity to be top of the Premier League standings at Christmas if they beat relegation battlers Sheffield United on Friday evening. Other results must go their way, but Unai Emery's side can take one step closer to being crowned the festive leaders with all three points.
The Villans have a few team news hindrances, notably the absence of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara due to suspension. Douglas Luiz is back from his ban but there will be no Kamara alongside as the Frenchman was sent off for raising his hand to the face of Brentford's Yegor Yarmolyuk.
Sheffield United, who recently sacked manager Paul Heckingbottom and reunited with former boss Chris Wilder, have won just two matches all season. The Blades, with 12 goals scored and 43 conceded, have both the worst defensive and attacking records in the division – and by rather a long way, too.
Villa will see this as a must-win game – and one they should win – as they look to continue their tremendous form, but Emery won't disrespect his opposition. With that in mind, here's the strong lineup we think the Spaniard will choose at Villa Park, with plenty of respect shown.
1. GK - Emi Martinez
Martinez is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and is at no threat for his starting spot whatsoever, even after a silly moment last weekend.
2. RB: Matty Cash
Cash was slightly disappointing at Brentford but an injury in defence makes for a bit of a shake-up.
3. CB - Ezri Konsa
Konsa has recently filled in at right-back but steps back into the centre of defence as Pau Torres is a big injury doubt. Douglas Luiz may have given a hint on a Twitch stream as he said "Pau isn't ready".
4. CB - Diego Carlos
The Brazilian has been in great form over the last few weeks, helping Villa to just one goal conceded in the last three Premier League matches.
