According to The Times, Villa have emerged as frontrunners to sign Phillips at the end of the season and are ready to pay a £60 million transfer fee for his services.

The report states that Steven Gerrard has identified the 26-year-old as a key target as Villa look to build their squad ready for a top six push next season.

Villa could even offer the Leeds-born midfielder a package of up to £10 million a year to prize him away from the West Yorkshire club.

The Daily Mail has also reported that Phillips will ‘assess his options’ this summer, providing hope for Villa over a transfer, regardless of whether Leeds go down or not.

Wijnaldum opportunity

Elsewhere, Villa could also get their chance to land Gini Wijnaldum this summer, with the Dutchman going through a tough time at PSG.

Wijnaldum has struggled since his free transfer from Liverpool, and as PSG look to shuffle the pack, he is likely to be offloaded, according to L’Equipe.

Villa have been linked in the past, and according to Jeunes Footeux, the midfielder could be available for just £21million this summer.
