Aston Villa have once again been able to show their pulling power under Steven Gerrard as they fended off interest from Atletico Madrid to sign right-back Matty Cash to a new five-year contract.

Cash, 24, has become a firm favourite at Villa Park following his move from Nottingham Forest in 2020 but rumours began circulating back in January of this year that his time could be coming to an end.

Spanish giants Atletico have been in the market for a new full-back following the departure of Kieran Trippier to Newcastle United and Cash was rumoured to be high on their list of priorities.

As moves go for a young footballer, it would have been a huge one for the recently capped Poland international but he’s put his faith in Gerrard and the project at Villa as a whole and pledged his future to the club.

“I’m delighted,” Cash told avfc.co.uk.

“It’s another proud day for me and my family.

“It’s another step in the right direction, and I just want to keep progressing every day, working hard and getting better.

“A big thanks to the club for rewarding me with a new contract, I can’t thank them enough.

“I’ve got a really good relationship with the fans. I’m an all-out committed player and hopefully they can see that,” he said.

“I want to keep showing them what I can do on the pitch. We’ve got such a good fanbase here, the club’s so big and I love putting the shirt on every week.

“It feels like home. I love coming to Bodymoor every day and working hard.

“I’ve only been here a couple of years, but time has gone so fast. I’ve only had a season playing in front of the fans.

“I love it here; I feel at home here and coming into training every day is great.”

From attracting players of the calibre of Philippe Coutinho to retaining valuable assets such as Matty Cash - it really shows a new found level of attraction at Villa Park under Gerrard.

Cash, who was voted the claret & blue’s player of the month for March has scored three goals and provided six assists in 60 appearances since his arrival in 2020.
