One of Aston Villa’s top performing youth players has heaped praise on club captain John McGinn as he continues to push for first team opportunities. Rory Wilson is a player that is quickly building a name for himself in the West Midlands and he has progressed rapidly through the club’s youth team since his arrival from Rangers last summer.

The 17-year-old is tipped to become a huge star in years to come and he has already fired in an impressive 12 goals in all competitions this season. His most eye-catching figures come at international level where he has already scored an incredible 14 goals in 13 games for Scotland’s U21 team.

Commenting on his progress, the attacker told The Herald: “There are good challenges with the [Aston Villa] 18s and 21s so it is just a case of me pushing on. I need to try and push on. We’ll wait and see how many goals I score. I take it game by game.

"I don’t have that much involvement with the first team, just now and again. I think it is really important though if I get the opportunity to go and take it and learn as much as I can.”

Wilson was also quick to praise the influence of club captain John McGinn, who also recently celebrated qualification for the Euros with Scotland.

He added: ““I speak to John McGinn now and again. He is good with all the young Scottish boys at Villa. He’s a top guy. I have scored 12 goals this season including the Scotland one on Sunday.”

Wilson is hoping to propel himself into the first team this season and addresses the challenges that he will face to break into that setup. He also spoke about adapting to life away from home following his move from Glasgow

Wilson explained: “ Obviously, the standard down there is top drawer especially with the first team. There are world class players everywhere. What you hear about it is what you get. But that’s what you want. It’s up to me to push myself.

“It took me a bit of time at first to settle in because you are away from your family for the first time. But you get used to it. You have to get on with it and take it in your stride."
