The January transfer window is edging closer and closer but is still over two and a half months away and the landscape of the Premier League could be very different by the time it opens.

Pressure continues to mount on Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa following Monday night’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, a result which saw the EFL Championship play-off winners climb off to bottom of the table, while Villa remained just outside the relegation zone in 16th place.

It also means that they have now picked up just nine points from their opening nine matches and only two wins - a disappointing return after a summer which saw them spend over £60 million.

If the Liverpool icon remains in charge by the time the new year comes around, then he could very well look to add even more new faces to his squad - including a current Manchester United player who looks set to finally leave Old Trafford on a permanent deal next year. Here is what is being reported:

Aston Villa ‘could look to sign’ Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek during the January transfer window

The news was first reported by 90min that Donny van de Beek has been granted permission to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window. The Dutchman spent the second half of last season on loan at Everton after struggling for regular game time with the Red Devils, and it looked as if a summer exit would be on the cards for the £40 million midfielder.

However, the arrival of Erik ten Hag seemed to signal another opportunity for the former Ajax star but regular minutes remain elusive - it is now said that Van de Beek’s camp have been informed by United they will not stand in his way if he wants to leave in January.

Following that initial report, Give Me Sport added that Aston Villa could look to sign van de Beek when the January transfer window opens. Journalist Dean Jones commented: “There are other options that will become available to Van de Beek. Clubs like Aston Villa, who need a fix right now, and by the time we get to January, I’m sure there’ll be two or three others that would like to sign him.”
