Aston Villa have completed their fifth signing of the summer transfer window, bringing back veteran Ashley Young on a one-year deal.

The 36-year-old whose contract expired at the end of June has decided to take up the option of a further 12 months at Villa Park and will remain with the club until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Watford have been tipped to swoop for their former star Ashley Young, who is said to be surplus to requirements at Aston Villa. Norwich City are also said to hold an interest in the versatile veteran, who racked up 39 caps for England during his senior international career. Young rejoined Villa for his second stint prior to the 21/22 season after his contract ran out at Serie A giants Inter Milan and went on to make 25 appearances in all competitions throughout the campaign.

Steven Gerrard has been keen to tie down his former England international teammate since the close of last season, touting him as a key figure both on and off the pitch for the claret and blue.

His versatility is of a huge advantage for Villa on the pitch and his leadership and experience is invaluable off of it.

The 36-year-old returned to Bodymoor Heath today along with the rest of the senior squad as preparations begin for another intense pre-season schedule.

What has Ashley Young said?

“I’ve loved every minute of it,” he told VillaTV.

“It’s been a good journey, a bit up and down last season but when a new manager comes in halfway through the season it’s going to be tough.

“It was tough at times but we had good times as well and that was a factor in it. His ambition is to get us back into Europe, where I believe the Club should be.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of working with the manager and I’m delighted to have signed another year to continue working with him.”
