Aston Villa are set to make an offer for Real Betis full-back Álex Moreno, according to reports in France.

Villa are looking to strengthen at left-back during the January transfer window, and one of the players they have been heavily linked with in recent weeks is Betis’ Moreno. The Spaniard has been one of the most impressive left-backs in La Liga over the last year or so, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side defying expectations in recent times.

Unai Emery would have to put a very significant bid in to convince Betis to sell, with Moreno, who is a central part of Pellegrini’s plans, under contract until 202, but Villa do have money, and that is causing concern in Southern Spain, according to Diario AS. It’s claimed there is a ‘certainty’ about a possible Villa bid, and there is concern because of the likelihood of Villa’s offer to Moreno being an attractive one, financially speaking.

Moreno was chased by Nottingham Forest during the summer, and he has been linked with big clubs in the past. Speaking in 2021, he said of a possible move: “It is true that they have called my agent big clubs but I don’t know anything. I’m focused on finishing LaLiga by entering Europe with Betis and I don’t know anything else. My agent has told me to focus on Betis, on my own, on the games that remain. It is a matter of the agents and it is a pride that big clubs notice me.”

The 29-year-old will have been heavily considered for a place in Spain’s World Cup squad this winter, but he eventually missed out to Jose Luis Gaya, who later withdrew with injury. As a result, Moreno is still waiting for his first Spain cap, but he is likely to get one in the next round of qualifiers, based on his current form.
