Former Aston Villa CEO forecasts huge summer blow for squad as new signing set to undergo medical next week

Aston Villa face a challenging summer window after missing out on a top five spot

Aston Villa missed out on Champions League qualification by the finest of margins and are now expected to face at least one costly blow in the transfer market as a result, according to former club CEO Keith Wyness.

The Villans finished the season in sixth position and were denied qualification to Europe’s elite competition on goal difference after failing to capitalise on Newcastle United’s defeat to Everton.

Villa were paired with a wounded Manchester United on the last day of the season, but fell to a 2-0 defeat after Emi Martinez was sent off for colliding with Rasmus Hoijlund, while there was also controversy at the other game when Morgan Rogers was denied what looked to be a clear and obvious goal after the referee blew the whistle for a foul on Altay Bayindir.

Wyness, who has had spell at board room level at Aberdeen and Everton before acting as Villa Park CEO between 2016 and 2018 believes the decision is likely to have huge ramifications on Villa’s transfer activity in what could potentially be a challenging window for Unai Emery and his recruitment team.

Keith Wyness shares grim Aston Villa forecast

Keith Wyness, who now runs his own football consultancy business, told Football Insider: “Finishing sixth is a big issue. I think Champions League was a big part of the puzzle for them.

“It could mean they have to sell both Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers, and thats the sort of blow which can have a big impact on the squad.

“Europa League football will mean around £30m for Villa, but that’s not enough. They are already sailing very close to the wind financially with PSR.”

Rogers has scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists over the course of the campaign, earning him a nomination for the Young Player of the Season while attracting interest from a number of top clubs including former side Manchester City and Chelsea, who are managed by the 22-year-old’s former youth team coach Enzo Maresca.

GiveMeSport claims that the former Middlesbrough ace is valued at around £90m by the Villa Park club. Meanwhile, Tielemans, who has been another standout performer is thought to be attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Aston Villa edge closer to first summer signing

Football Insider has claimed that highly-rated Feyenoord prodigy Zepiqueno Redmond will travel to the West Midlands next week to complete a medical at Villa Park.

The 18-year-old is thought to be close to signing a four-year-contract with the Lions and is expected to join on a free transfer to boost squad depth for the upcoming Europa League campaign.

Redmond has a record of two goals in nine first team appearances for the Dutch side and is a regular for Netherlands at Under-19 level. He arrives as a direct replacement for Jhon Duran and is hoping to provide long-term competition to leading goalscorer Ollie Watkins in the years to come.
