Aston Villa could finally have their man after being linked with a two-time Ligue One winner in the winter.

Aston Villa are 'progressing' in talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain's Spanish midfielder Carlos Soler according to a report.

Renowned French football newspaper L'Equipe say that Villa are progressing in talks with PSG to sign the 27-year-old with negotiations going on for months. Soler has won back to back Ligue One titles with the side from the French capital but has found himself out of favour in recent weeks.

He has played in 26 games in all competitions this season but didn't start a single game in the Champions League and half of his appearances in the league have been substitute appearances. Soler has still been able to contribute with some goals however having assisted four times and also scoring in a 3-0 win over Strasbourg when he was deployed as a right-back.

He is under contract at the Parc de Princes until the summer of 2027 and joined PSG for a reported €18m two years ago. There is a question mark according to Get French Football News as to how much PSG value him at.

Soler is a 14-time Spain international and has also won the Copa del Rey. He played for Valencia before joining PSG and made 226 appearances for them over seven seasons. It was suggested back in October that Villa were interested but faced competition from Premier League rivals Brighton, as well as Soler's former club Valencia.

In other news, the Telegraph are reporting that discussions will start in the summer over a lucrative long-term deal for Unai Emery. The club activated a clause in Emery's contract which has him tied down until 2027, but there is a desire to go beyond that. It could make him one of the most highly-paid coaches in the world.

Back when he signed his new deal in mid-April, Emery said: “We are enjoying our way together with Villa fans, the club owners, management and this great group of players that we are proud of.

“Me and the football management… we share the vision of the owners. Nassef [Sawiris] and Wes [Edens] are very supportive and respectful, and we have a good environment and the right structure to develop this football club.

“We must maintain the hard-working spirit, clever decisions and coordination with the ownership that we have found during this time. We will work to get better and better. And we will demand from each other. Ambition already is, and must always be, the motto of this project.”
