Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers both rank among the teams that have received the fewest penalties in the Premier League since 2019.

That’s according to the latest data compiled by BetVictor who have only Burnley and Newcastle United sitting below the two west midlands’ sides in ‘penalties received’ since the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Villa have been awarded just 10 penalties in two and a half years whereas Wolves haven’t even broken into double figures - receiving just nine in that same time period.

It’s a theme that has continued into this campaign, too.

Wolves were awarded only their first penalty of the season in the victory over Southampton last weekend whereas the claret & blue have only received two - both coming back in August.

And whilst you can put a lot of it down to either sheer misfortune or luck, it is a quite staggering difference when you compare it to those at the top.

In the same 30 month period where Villa and Wolves have barely broken into double figures or not at all, Manchester United (28), Chelsea (24), Manchester City (24) and Leicester City (20) have all received 20 or more.

United, who ironically were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time against Villa at Old Trafford earlier in the season lead the way by some way with 28. That’s nearly 20 more than the two west midlands’ clubs.

The Premier League average currently sits at 14 so both Villa and Wolves are falling well short at this current moment in time.

But if there is one positive to take from the data, it’s that when awarded a penalty, Steven Gerrard & Bruno Lage’s men usually take them.

Over the last two and a half seasons, Wolves have a 100% conversion rate with a perfect nine out of nine whereas Villa have missed just two out of their 10 however one of those was taken by Wesley who is currently out on loan.
