Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has reportedly turned his attention to Villarreal striker Nicolas Jackson after speculation surrounding a potential move for Joao Felix ground to a halt. The 21-year-old, who Emery worked with during his time with the Yellow Submarine, has seen his name pop up in headlines a few times over recent months.

Versatile and still yet to reach anywhere near what is likely to be his full potential, Jackson can play anywhere across the front three. This campaign has seen the Senegalese play predominantly as a right winger, but he can also play on the left flank or as a centre forward.

Speaking about Jackson earlier this season, Emery told Spanish outlet AS: “He is a player who is in the process of growing. There are times when some players have to go elsewhere to grow, but we are betting on him because his contribution is very high. He must get experience in front of goal and this is a learning process. We need to establish young players and we want to bet on them.”

Now, with the January transfer window fast approaching, Football Insider reports that Villa have made a formal enquiry to Villarreal for Jackson. It is said that Emery, who is beginning to build a new-look squad at Villa Park, has outlined the need for a versatile forward as a priority. Jackson is among those on the shortlist.

With just two goals and two assists in 13 La Liga appearances this season, Jackson is yet to set the world alight for Villarreal, but he has certainly shown signs of promise. It is worth noting most of his minutes have not come in a central striker position, and he is of course still developing as a player.

If Jackson were to head to Villa Park, he would be adding competition to an already talented forward line, perhaps pushing the likes of Leon Bailey, Danny Ings, Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho - if he stays - to the next level. In other news, Lions goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has caused a bit of a stir after celebrating his World Cup victory.
