Sunderland could land £13m Aston Villa signing for less than half price amid keen Leeds United interest

Aston Villa are gearing up for the start of the 2025/26 season. Unai Emery’s side will be eyeing another push for the Champions League. They narrowly missed out in the last campaign after finishing outside the top five.
The Midlands outfit have the opportunity to sign some players over the next couple of months. They also have the chance to let some individuals head out the exit door. That would help free up space and funds to pave the way for new arrivals.

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno has emerged on the radar of Sunderland, according to Fichajes. The report adds that Burnley, Real Betis and Real Sociedad are also keen on the player for just £5million. He is under contract at Villa Park until June 2026 meaning he is due to become a free agent next year.
Moreno, 32, spent last term on loan with fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest. He played 19 matches for the Reds, 15 of which came in the league. The full-back is now back with his parent club and they have a big decision to make on what to do with him next.
The left-back was snapped up by Aston Villa back in 2022 to boost their defensive department. He has since made 48 appearances in all competitions and has scored two goals from the back. Prior to his move to England, he had spells in the past at Barcelona, Mallorca, Rayo Vallecano, Elche and Betis.
What now for Alex Moreno at Aston Villa amid new Leeds United interest?
Cutting ties with Moreno would probably suit all parties involved. He has fallen out of favour at Aston Villa since his £13million switch, hence why he was sent to Nottingham Forest. Sunderland are preparing for life in the top flight following their recent promotion from the Championship and he would inject experience into their squad.

Hide AdRegis Le Bris’ men have money to spend after selling Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund. He has followed in his brother Jude’s footsteps to sign for the Bundesliga giants. His departure has raised funds to pave the way for potential reinforcements.
The Black Cats may have to see off competition from Leeds United as well as the likes of Burnley, Real Sociedad and Betis in pursuit of Moreno’s signature. According to reporter Ben Jacobs on X, the Whites are also firmly in the frame. Daniel Farke’s men won the second tier title ahead of the Clarets and Sheffield United and are looking for potential reinforcements.
Junior Firpo is out of contract later this month and is due to become a free agent. Therefore, they could see Moreno as someone to step into his shoes if he left. They would be able to offer him regular game time at Elland Road which may turn his head, whereas Sunderland already have the highly-rated Dennis Cirkin available at their disposal meaning there would be more competition for a place in their starting XI.
