22 brilliant pictures of Aston Villa fans at Wembley as Unai Emery's side bow out of FA Cup - gallery

22 superb photos of Aston Villa fans from the 3-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace at Wembley.

There aren’t many better sights in football.

The Wembley way, painted in claret and blue for FA Cup semi-final day. Aston Villa fans waiting in eager anticipation to cheer on their team against Crystal Palace. Can the hoodoo be broken against Oliver Glasner’s side? Have Unai Emery’s men got the bottle to reach the final?

These were questions on many supporters’ lips ahead of kick-off. The butterflies were bubbling. The nerves were jangling. The excitement was brewing.

All the emotions before the game - simultaneously unbearable yet nonpareil and yearned for - are so often worth it. That wasn’t the case on Saturday evening, however, as Palace ran out comfortable 3-0 victors under the arch.

Villa supporters were stunned and heartbroken at their side’s lack of vigour and cutting edge. Palace, meanwhile, were at their very best to make Emery’s usually excellent team look ordinary.

But these are the trials and tribulations of football. The downs are what make the highs so remarkable. And defeat didn’t mean Villa weren’t able to enjoy a rare day out to Wembley – nobody can take that away.

Birmingham World went out to take photos of fans on Wembley Way before the game and took more from the press box just ahead of kick-off and then during the match. Here’s a run-through of some of the best.
