Aston Villa had one of their most iconic eras - if not the most - of their history between the years 1970 and 1989, with promotions, titles and relegations aplenty - as well as a couple of League Cup wins.
It was a period where some of the club’s biggest legends graced the field at Villa Park, including Peter Withe, Charlie Aitken, Gordon Cowans, Dennis Mortimer, Brian Little and Gordon Cowans.
Near the start of the period - the 1971-72 season - saw a promotion from Division Three up to Division Two, with The Villans winning the league with 70 points.
Just a few years on, in the 1974-75 campaign, the men in claret and blue rose up to Division One with a second-placed finish, as well as a famous League Cup win.
Villa lifted the League Cup trophy yet again in 1977 and they asserted dominance in the top tier for a good decade afterward.
The 1980-81 season was perhaps one of the most iconic of all as Ron Saunders led his side to the Division One title – The Villans’ first since 1910.
Peter Withe led the goalscoring that term with 20 goals in the league and, rather astonishingly, just 14 players were used all season.
Here are some of the best images in the archives from that historic era.
