Aston Villa v Burnley team news - eight players ruled out

Team news and injury updates ahead of Aston Villa v Burnley in the Premier League - including an update on Luca Digne.

Aston Villa hope to put their disappointment of Boxing Day behind them when they host Burnley at Villa Park in the Premier League. The Villains had a disappointing collapse against Manchester United, losing 3-2.

John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker gave Villa the lead but Alejandro Garnacho scored a brace and then Ramus Hojuland netted the winner in the 82nd minute. It was the first time that Villa had dropped points from a winning position and the defeat acted as a real reality check for a side that has had the plaudits this season.

Burnley played hours earlier and suffered a 2-0 defeat to Villa's current title rivals Liverpool. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring in the sixth minute and then Diogo Jota made sure of the victory with an effort in stoppage time.

The current league standings after the latest round of fixtures sees Burnley second from bottom and five points adrift of safety. Villa are still in third, and are three points off of league leaders Liverpool, however Man City and Spurs aren't too far behind and have games in hand over them.

To make matters worse for Villa from their last game they saw first-choice left-back Luca Digne have to depart in the second-half after being helped off with a suspected hamstring injury. Digne got himself injured trying to stop Garnacho scoring, but it didn't mean anything in the end as the Argentine was adjudged to have been offside anyway. Alex Moreno replaced Digne, and could get the opportunity for a rare start after the Frenchman made the position his own this season.

In the previous meeting between the two sides this season, Villa came out on top 3-1 winners. Matty Cash scored a brace and despite Lyle Foster's effort just after half-time, Moussa Diaby scored in the 61st minute to give Villa the victory.
