Aston Villa go into the winter break on the back of an impressive 1-0 win away at Everton.

The victory at Goodison Park sent Villa up to 11th in the Premier League table, with Steven Gerrard having recorded five wins and a draw in his first 10 league games as head coach at Villa Park.

The business Villa have also done in the January transfer window so far has demonstrated the pulling power Gerrard has, and shown he is keen to sign players of proven calibre who will be an upgrade on what he already has at his disposal.

The arrival – albeit on loan -of Philippe Coutinho was a real statement of intent from the club, and the swoop for French international left-back Lucas Digne for £25m appears to be brilliant business in today’s market.

With Gerrard’s men sitting comfortably in mid-table, guests on this week’s West Midlands Football Podcast discuss Gerrard’s impact, and how beneficial a winter break could be for the side.
