Aston Villa outcast 'in talks' over West Brom transfer - but Championship competition fierce

The latest Deadline Day updates as West Brom eye an Aston Villa outcast for a late transfer.

West Bromwich Albion are reportedly in talks with Aston Villa to sign out-of-sorts defender Calum Chambers before the transfer deadline.

The former Arsenal man is unwanted by Unai Emery at Villa Park and has been on the transfer list ever since the winter window opened. A move could now finally be on the cards for Chambers, who has made just three appearances across all competitions this season.

It wasn't much better for the 29-year-old last campaign, either, as he played 17. times and accumulated merely 611 minutes of competitive action. His nightmare could finally be over, however, as West Brom and other clubs are hoping to complete a Deadline Day swoop.

The Telegraph reports the Baggies have made contact with Villa over a potential deal but face competition from other teams in the Sky Bet Championship. Those sides are not named and the nature of the deal is uncertain, but a loan with an option to buy is likely to be the approach.

Chambers, who signed for Villa on a free transfer from Arsenal in January 2022, was always expected to be a squad player but his game time has lacked even more than promised. Three times a senior England international, the versatile defender certainly has talent but he is beyond his peak.
